Thing #23

YEA!!!!! I am done!!!! This was a one in a life time experience. 23things really forced me to do things that I would never had done on my own. For this I am a bit thankful (LOL).

1. I liked creating my avatar. I also liked using all the many different functions with google.
2. I have learned that I have a lot to learn. I feel to better myself as a librarian, I really need to make the time and figure some of these things out. I will continue to try and work on some of the exercises.
3. I guess that some of the things that surprised me were how hard some things were. I really have a long way to go on my discoveries.
4. I think that whom ever worked on this project is a genius. I would never try to improve on something so above my knowledge.
5. I am not sure if I would participate again. It took a long time. Maybe if it were not so long; maybe 5things. LOL.
6. Not sure what I would say... ask me in a few days.

Thing #22

The Nings were like what it said in the 23Things... it's like Facebook and MySpace. It is a place where people all over the world could collaborate. Again, this is a really neat thing if you are into that kind of stuff. However, I would rather collaborate with people in my district or school. At this point in my life, I do not have the time or desire to sit at the computer and "talk" to people I don't know. I do see how maybe reading some of the posts could be beneficial for finding ideas. Remember, I am the one that does not even have a facebook account.
I would possibly be interested in limiting a ning locally to the librarians in my district or for the teachers at my school.

Thing #21

Ok, I could not figure this out. Podcast and Photostory were not user friendly. I feel very old.
I am sure with help this is something that I can figure out, but not computer savvy enough to do this alone.

Thing #6

I liked looking at Flickr Color Pickr and Mosaic Maker. They were both very cool. I am sure that students would pick this up in a heartbeat. They seem to be better at doing the pictures then even me. I can see where a teacher can use this with the kids in her class or even me in the library. I am in the process of creating a library webpage and will use this for pictures.

Thing #20

50 States and Capitals (cartoon song)

This video was uploaded from Teachertube. It is fun looking for video's however, I am not sure that my school has access.

The videos are great to use with students. So many students respond well to seeing videos. They enjoy something different other than the teacher talking all the time. I can see where the music teacher can even use this particular video. This is also a fun way for librarians to add to their lessons as well.

Thing #19

Zango is the site that I looked up. I did something mindless and red about celebrities. It was cool to see something other then E! Entertainment. This site was ranked number one in games and entertainment. One day, when I have nothing to do... ha ha, I may take a look at this site again. This is a good spot to look for good websites.

Thing #18

Here we go!!! I love Googledocs. This is a way to save documents that go with you everywhere. No longer do you need to have a flash drive. I can't tell you how many times I have left mine at home or brought the wrong one. This also lends itself to collaborating with teammates. Each person can review and edit. I can not find any disadvantages so far.

I LOVE GOOGLE!!!

here is my googledoc test page: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=ddwbn2tr_0c9jddp8p

Thing #17

http://rollyo.com/jmcnabb/mcnabb_kinder/

OK, another thing that I liked. This is starting to get better; or maybe I am starting to think differently. I am learning so many ways that the computer can make things easier. I really can't wait to share this with the teachers at my school.
The rollyo page was soooo user friendly and easy to do.
YEA!!!!!

Thing #16

OK, a wiki is something that I actually understand and see myself using. YEA!!!! I would only like this with family and friends, in other words not public, and within the school. Using this as a collaboration tool with teachers would be fantastic. Like the guy said on the video, emails can get messy when you are trying to communicate with several people. A wiki is a great solution.

Thing #15

I read "A temporary place in time" by Dr. Wendy Schultz.
Librarians are "ch-ch-changing" (Bowie). And we the librarians need to change with it. As stated by Dr. Schultz, "they are convocations of people, ideas, and artifacts in dynamic exchange."
We need to help the students that we service and get them ready for a life including technology. As shown in the video, technology is a part of their daily life (outside of school). We need to bring it into school as well. We (education) are slowing down the kids.

Thing #14

After looking at technorati, I understand that it is a way to organize blogs, videos and other things. However, I continue to be blown away by ALL the information out there. If I want to look up something, I will use Google or the online databases at our school. If I want to read about library related things, I have a few librarian's blog that I would go to. However, sitting on the computer and reading just stuff isn't for me. I think that we as teachers need to be careful using things like technorati in the classroom. I did not see a way to monitor use.

Thing #13

I liked the social bookmarking site named Del.icio.us. Usually I store things in my favorites through my computer. This has been frustrating for me. When I get to school my favorites are not the same as I have at home. It seems that the website I need is always saved on the other computer. The entire "tag" thing was a bit confusing until I watched the video; than it all made since. I also liked how you can share your favs with other people. I will need to play with this more to get better at it, but for sure this is something that I will use.

Thing #12

I agreed with many of the "commandments" and other suggestions on creating good blogs. This goes back to using the Internet appropriately as discussed in class. Use humor in your blog and read your blog before posting are two of my favorites. Using humor will lead to people commenting on your blog. I believe where it said that only 1 out of 100 people comment on a blog. My suggestion to add to this is to use spell check.
After posting on my classmates blogs, I went on two blogs from googleblog. One was on Twilight the movie and the other was on H. Clinton being Sect of State.

Thing #11

I liked part of LibraryThing. I have done something similar to this for another class. Kids and teachers can share what they are reading and recommend to friends.
The groups were a mess. I hit several of them and it was basically a blog. I even typed in a search for librarians. This was the only site that I might find useful. I am not a blogger and all the posting were overwhelming to me.

Thing #5

Looking through Flickr was fun. I tried to do this from school and of course it was blocked.
The picture I chose was of these cute kids reading on a billboard and another kid in front of the billboard was trying to read what was in the picture. Really cute!!!!
I got this photo from Attribution License. mailto:Tom@HK is listed as the source.

Thing #10

Here is what I created on online image creator. This was fun. I tried to do other things with it, but did not have a picture of myself to work with. Since I was working without a picture, I chose happy face generator. http://www.happyfacegenerator.com/

I can see where kids would really have a good time with this. There are so many was to be creative. This can be utilized with the art classes as a collaboration attempt.

Thing #9

I was very confussed searching for blogs. My most favoite way to search for blogs to add to email was just to do a search through google reader. The ones given to us through library2play were too overwhelming.

Thing #8

I just added 5 new RSS links to my email address. This is a newsreader that will aleart me when a new blog has been posted. I am not a huge fan of blogs. I am not sure if this is something that I would be interested in. However, the people that subscribe to blogs may love this. I think that students could use this within the school as a search for information on subjects that they are learning.

Thing #7

I revisited my igoogle page and made some changes. I really liked playing and adding things to my homepage. I think that kids would really like making this unique to themselves. I also took a look at google doc. This seemed very cool. I can see where each team could access and edit an online document. The creator creates a document and saves it to the doc. An email is sent to the other team members allowing them to edit where needed.

On to Flickr....

Don't forget about paint?

Hey PreK and Kinder teachers, paint on your computer is a great place to start and teach a child about the computer and the mouse.
Go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, and Paint.
The student uses the mouse to click shapes, colors, and/or lines. There is even a cute eraser for them to use to correct their picture.
The more they use the mouse and the computer the more comfortable they will be.
This can be one of your centers or learning stations. Don't let your computer be a dust collector; let it be a kid collector...

How to use United Streaming in my classroom.

Many of you have used United Streaming in the past. This may be a refresher for you.
If you are new to the district or new to teaching, you will love this technology instruction tool. Log onto http://streaming.discoveryeducation.com/
Your user name and password will be personalized for you. (I have a list in my office.)
You can type in the grade level and subject or topic and United Streaming will give you a list of video clips both cartoon and live action depending on what you are looking for.
Our students are not just wanting to see pictures of people or animals anymore; they are way too advanced.
Remember, use United Streaming to enhance your teaching; not replace it.

Teacher's want a Blog? Here's how.

Teacher's use a blog to communicate with parents and students. It's easy; here's how:
Just copy and paste the http://www.blogger.com and create an account.
Go to the "Blogger Help" tab and read.
You can have daily homework assignments, what's happening in the classroom, and of course my favorite; "what am I reading?"
Make sure that you save as you go. If you move from one tab to another, you will loose anything not saved.
If you need help, just come by and see me. I will do my best.

What am I reading?

I am currently reading "Thirteen Reason's Why" by Jay Asher.
This is a novel about a teenage girl that commits suicide and sends out thirteen cassette tapes to the people in her life that she is giving blame to.

My favorite reads for the summer were "Bud, Not Buddy" by Christopher Paul Curtis and
"The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane" by Kate DiCamillo.

Personal Profile

Hello everyone,
My name is Jackie McNabb. I am the new librarian at Lamar Elem. I have been a classroom teacher for 14 years. I went back to school in Sum/07 to start on my Masters and certification in Library Science. The plan is to be finished next summer.
I am married to Charlie and we celebrated our 16th year this August. We have two kids, Matthew is 12 and Erin is 6. They are so much fun!! We also have a Havanese (dog) named Max. He will be 2 this October. He is still wild and running around the house. Thank goodness he is past the "chewing-up everything in site" stage.
